Navigating in high seas: how could collaborative Practical Wisdom help steer professional practice and leadership in health, social care and education?

Aristotle’s Phronesis (also known as Practical Wisdom) has both an individual and collective power which, recent research suggests, may help us to discern some forward pathways for the development of values-based, collaborative professionalism. This seminar is an opportunity for shared exploration of Practical Wisdom and how it might help us to navigate more wisely through the challenging tides experienced within the health, social care and education professions today.

The purpose is to chart a way forward by strengthening opportunities for development of collegial Practical Wisdom in the professions through a collaborative network of professional practitioners, leaders and educators. The session aims to identify wise practical actions to create and shape this new network.

Co-facilitated by Dr Sabena Jameel (University of Birmingham), Dr Jane Gaukroger (Cultivating Wisdom) and Dr Julia Flutter (Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge/The Chartered College of Teaching) the seminar will draw on different perspectives on Practical Wisdom and professionalism as points of embarkation on a collective journey. Attendees are cordially invited to contribute their own reflections and tales from practice to set the direction for the journey ahead.
