Personality and Its Disturbances in Philosophy, Psychology, and Artificial Intelligence – Programme and meeting details

Personality has long been a central theme in both philosophical reflection andpsychological inquiry. Yet, the disturbances of personality challenge our conceptual, clinical, and experiential understanding of personality functioning. The recent shift in the diagnosis of personality disorders – from categorical classification to dimensional conceptualization – fosters a reconsideration of fundamental questions about normality

in personality functioning or directions of treatment and development. At the same time, the increasing use of computational and AI-based tools in psychology and psychiatry raises new possibilities and questions for how we conceptualize, model, and engage with disturbances of personality.

This seminar seeks to open a dialogue between disciplines, examining how livedexperience-based insights, philosophical analyses, clinical perspectives, and computational or AI-informed approaches can illuminate the nature of personality and its disorders.

Navigating Value: Phenomenological Perspectives on Emotional Abilities in the Digital Age

This workshop explores the role of value experience in emotion regulation. Emotional responses are typically elicited by things we deeply care about—values we perceive to be at stake. A key emotional capacity lies in the ability to critically reassess the values underlying our emotional responses and, when necessary, to revise or realign them.

The workshop examines the psychological processes involved in this capacity—particularly inner speech, self-regulation, and a broader notion of agency—from a phenomenological perspective. It highlights the challenges of navigating value, especially in contexts involving mental health struggles and in digital environments where people engage with artificial intelligence agents and encounter unique demands on their emotional self-understanding.

Calculating Experience? A New Role for Phenomenology in the Development and Application of Artificial Intelligence for Mental Health

This seminar will reflect on the possibilities of integrating phenomenology (with its focus on lived experience, embodiment, intersubjectivity, and empathy) with “conscious-less” artificial intelligence technologies. It will explore the potential of the phenomenological approach to contribute to computational approaches to psychopathology and vice versa to advance synthetic phenomenology for mental health care.

Phenomenology and Mental Health Network (PMH)

Phenomenology is a rigorous philosophical method of studying the structures of consciousness and how these structures underlie and affect human experience. By undergoing a clinical turn, 20th century phenomenology became more pragmatic in seeking to understand the variety of lived experiences of patients suffering from mental disorders, often undermining a sense of a strict boundary between the normal and the pathological. Basic phenomenological themes, such as temporality, embodiment, intentionality, understanding, and intersubjectivity, thereby gained a new diagnostic and therapeutic significance. The tradition of phenomenological psychopathology became an important actor on the scene of 20th century psychiatry. The PMH network strives to promote the best of this tradition
