Personality has long been a central theme in both philosophical reflection andpsychological inquiry. Yet, the disturbances of personality challenge our conceptual, clinical, and experiential understanding of personality functioning. The recent shift in the diagnosis of personality disorders – from categorical classification to dimensional conceptualization – fosters a reconsideration of fundamental questions about normality in personality functioning or directions of treatment and development. At the same time, the increasing use of computational and AI-based tools in psychology and psychiatry raises new possibilities and questions for how we conceptualize, model, and engage with disturbances of personality. This seminar seeks to open a dialogue between disciplines, examining how livedexperience-based insights, philosophical analyses, clinical perspectives, and computational or AI-informed approaches can illuminate the nature of personality and its disorders.

5th March 2025 09:30 to 1600

This event is organised by  the Collaborating Centre for Values-based practice in Health and Social Care, St Catherine's College Oxford, the Oxford Empathy Programme and the Stoneygate Centre for Empathic Healthcare, Leicester Medical School, University of Leicester.   Empathy is ethically and epistemically central to clinical psychiatry and mental health care. It is ethically central in that the mental health professionals’ effort of trying to understand the distressing experiences that impact their patients will help instil a sense of respect for their patients’ predicament. It is epistemically central because the knowledge gained through the empathic effort informs the actions taken by professionals.

12 February 2025 9.30-16.30

This seminar will reflect on the possibilities of integrating phenomenology (with its focus on lived experience, embodiment, intersubjectivity, and empathy) with “conscious-less” artificial intelligence technologies. It will explore the potential of the phenomenological approach to contribute to computational approaches to psychopathology and vice versa to advance synthetic phenomenology for mental health care.

Wednesday 29th October 2025 10am

This one-day conference will explore the background to the Supreme Court Montgomery judgement 10 years ago and the impact it has had on shared decision making in healthcare since that time. Speakers include Lauren Sutherland KC, the lawyer who successfully took Nadine Montgomery’s case to the Supreme Court and Professor Jonathan Herring, a medical law expert from Oxford University. This conference will bring you up to date on challenges to the judgement since 2015, changes in clinical practice and a view from a medical defence organisation on its implications for clinicians. It will include a view from patients and opportunities for discussion.

Wednesday, October 22 · 9:45am - 4pm

This workshop explores the role of value experience in emotion regulation. Emotional responses are typically elicited by things we deeply care about—values we perceive to be at stake. A key emotional capacity lies in the ability to critically reassess the values underlying our emotional responses and, when necessary, to revise or realign them. The workshop examines the psychological processes involved in this capacity—particularly inner speech, self-regulation, and a broader notion of agency—from a phenomenological perspective. It highlights the challenges of navigating value, especially in contexts involving mental health struggles and in digital environments where people engage with artificial intelligence agents and encounter unique demands on their emotional self-understanding.
