Dr Paquita de Zulueta – Introduction to symposium and Human Values in Healthcare Forum

Paquita worked from 1984 as an inner-city, London-based GP (retired 2021) with a special interest in mental health, migrant health, clinical ethics, professional education and development. She is a senior honorary lecturer at Imperial College since 2000 and has been teaching and writing about clinical ethics since 1993. Paquita worked part time as a CBT, compassion focused & EMDR therapist since 2008, and is a qualified coach and mentor. She was for ten years a member of Imperial College NHS Trust’s clinical ethics committee and for 6 years of the Nuffied Council on Bioethics. She is a Schwartz Round facilitator since 2015 for Imperial College NHS Trust and medical school. Paquita has set up a charity called Human Values in Healthcare Forum (HVHF) which aims, in collaboration with others, to rehumanise healthcare and prevent dehumanisation. She is a trustee of the IME and a member of the RCGP ethics committee.

Jess’s talk discusses why it is necessary to design the NHS’s information infrastructure before AI is implemented into the NHS, and highlights the consequences of not taking this approach. Dr. Jessica Morley is a postdoctoral associate at the Yale Digital Ethics Center, Yale University. She has a BA, MSc, and PhD from the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on the technical feasibility, social acceptability, ethical justifiability, and legal compliance of the use of data analytics (including AI) within the healthcare system.

Prof Angeliki Kerasidou – Who is the expert in the room?

AI tools used in healthcare have been shown to perform as well as or in some cases better than human doctors. This raises the question of whether the epistemic authority in clnical decision making should be shifted from human doctors to AI tools and systems. In my talk I examine the question of who should be considered the expert in the room in the AI-assisted healthcare. Angeliki Kerasidou is Associate Professor in Bioethics at the Ethox Centre, University of Oxford. She holds an NDPH Senior Fellowship and is Official Fellow of Reuben College. Her current research focuses on the ethics of AI in global health research and in healthcare with particular focus on the issues of accuracy, efficiency and trust.

The effect of reductionism and trying to protocolise care in the messy context of general practice. Rupal Shah is a GP and GP trainer in Battersea, in the same practice for 19 years. She also works as an Associate Dean for NHS-WTE, in the London Professional Development Team, leading on the Enhancing Generalist Skills programme and is part of the Differential Attainment Strategy group.
