Knowledge Co-Creation in Healthcare and The Values of Inquiry: Revisiting the Relationship between Norms of Action and Norms of Belief

24 September 2025, 9.30am-4.00pm, St Catherine’s College, Oxford and online
St Catherine’s College Oxford

Meeting Details

Knowledge co-creation in healthcare raises important questions for theory and practice: How does knowledge co-creation differ from other collective projects aimed at knowledge? What counts as success in knowledge co-creation? Does it require joint ownership over the process and outcomes? Could that be achieved by diverse and even diffuse collectives? Should all participants agree on shared objectives, or could they contribute well when pursuing different agendas? What kinds of recognition and support should be offered to experts by experience and respectively, experts by training? How might the values of different participants inform their work together? Could they be at odds with the values that define knowledge co-creation as a distinct practice?

The Seminar will critically explore these and related questions by taking as a focal point the norms and values of inquiry shaping knowledge co-creation. The guiding hypothesis is that a focus on inquiry will help articulate a more dynamic, inclusive and proactive approach to collaborative learning and research in healthcare than a focus on knowledge transfer or knowledge acquisition. This shift of focus will emphasise the meaning-making and problem-solving dimensions of knowledge co-creation as a potentially transformative collective action within specific intellectual and institutional contexts.
The proposed exploration will engage with new and emerging trends in the theory of knowledge (the so-called inquiry turn) and the practice of co-creation in healthcare (greater recognition of the value of lived experiences as a basis for relevant expertise). By bringing these together, the Seminar will aim to offer a step change in understanding the relationship between norms of action and norms of belief in healthcare, a longstanding programme of the Collaborating Centre.
