How lived experience can shape psychiatry. Joint event with Norms of Action and Belief in Practice (NABP) Network

Session Aims.

• To look at how lived experience as a theory and practice can shape psychiatry in more effective co-creation and coproduction outcomes in race equality and mental health.

• Chair: Simon Clarke.

• Participants. Professor Tim Kendall, Doctor David Crepaz- Keay, Doctor Colin King

Background to the seminar.

The session focuses on the work of the Whiteness and Race Equality Network to foster dialogue, develop joint conceptual theories, and create models of good practice for advancing equity with clinicians, in line with the Mental Health Use of Forces Act, across the colour line. It also addresses our Lancet journals, Peer Review models, and mental health challenges, engaging with the sentiments of the paper, ‘They diagnosed me as a schizophrenic when I was just a Gemini’. The session will include presentations from Professor Tim Kendall, author of the NICE guideline on how psychiatric values and norms should reflect authentic Lived Experience. Doctor David Crepaz-Keay, senior researcher at the Mental Health Foundation, will discuss his experiences as both a practitioner and a survivor, alongside Doctor Colin King’s framework of the Re-colonisation of psychiatry and Afro-centric models for how Lived Experience can shape diagnosis and treatment through co-creation and co-production. Simon Clarke, co-coordinator of WREN, will facilitate a panel discussion and Q&A on the role of whiteness in mental health and race equality.

In memory of Olaseni Lewis.

Areas of discussion.

1. Why is it important for Psychiatry to respond to the need for equity with Lived experience?

2. What areas of Psychiatry can benefit from shared norms and power in coproduction in the process of our shared lived experiences using NICE guidelines?

3. What changes do you feel you need to examine to begin building coproduction?
