About the Event

This webinar builds on the conference of October 14th, 2019 which focused on identifying whiteness in working across the colour for race equality in the areas of diagnosis, research and counselling in mental health. This event looks at the challenges, benefits and the steps needed to develop a race equality research model: an authentic co-production and equity approach to address the overrepresentation of black people in mental health in the era of COVID-19.

Speakers

Akiko Hart
Akiko Hart is the CEO of NSUN, the National Survivor User Network. She is also the Chair of ISPS UK and sits on the boards of Hearing Voices Network England and National Voices. She has previously worked as the Director of Mental Health Europe.

Doctor Colin King – The importance of a first-person black perspective, as a valued epistemology. From pre-production to coproduction: working across the colour line in mental health work to make black lives matter.

Dr King is Lead Convenor of The Whiteness and Race Equality Network
He is the founder of BACA- the Black and Asian Coaches Association

Professor Steve Gillard and Dr Alison Faulkner - Moving from the third person whiteness to working in a coproduction collaborative research model of Race equality in mental health.

Steve is Professor of Mental Health at City University, London
Alison is a survivor researcher and trainer. She is part of the NSUN

Niall Boyce - Addressing whiteness in psychiatric Journals to improve equality in research in relation to race and mental health.

Niall is editor of Lancet Psychiatry
