People with severe mental illness die prematurely and have more physical illness during their lifetime than people in the general population who do not have a mental illness.  As a psychiatrist, I am interested in exploring how values-based practice could potentially be utilized to change the attitudes of staff who deliver clinical care, as well as the attitudes of those who commission and manage healthcare services; so there is a greater willingness to attend to (or arrange for) the physical health needs of people with severe mental illness to be met.
