My interest is in Advance Care Planning. I am a consultant respiratory physician, with responsibilities for acute medical admissions. Since returning to Scotland in 2013, I have developed a Hospital Anticipatory Care Plan – a tool for improving crisis management for patients who are clinically unstable and/or at the end of life. I have been commissioned by NHS Lanarkshire to develop, implement, and organize training and education for the HACP project across 3 DGHs. The aims are to enhance shared decision making, improve communication between staff about crisis management, reduce harm resulting from over-treatment and under-treatment, and promote “common sense and compassion” in end-of-life care in hospital.
Education; Policy: end-of-life care/ treatment escalation and limitation/shared decision making/advance care planning; Services/person-centered;
Communication skills: the diagnosis of dying, prognostic conversations and anticipatory care planning
